The Eternal City has history. Perhaps too much history. Founded in blood and flames, Rome rose from a small hill tribe to become the world’s greatest empire, whose influence laid the foundations of modern Europe. But what if history could be changed? What if events of the past could be replayed? What if Rome never was?
Spending October half-term in Rome, Suze, Mell, Sarah, Claire, Jerry and Simon were hoping to do nothing more than relax and enjoy the sights. When the unexpected arrival of Simon’s girlfriend coincides with the theft of part of an ancient legionary eagle from the Capitoline Museum, they find themselves swept into adventure again. For the eagle once belonged to Remus, twin brother of Romulus - the founder of Rome. In the wrong hands, it has the power to turn back the clock, changing the fate of the twins and ensuring that Rome and her Empire never existed. Echoes of the Eternal City is the team’s second archaeological adventure. Echoes can be read as a standalone adventure, or find out what the group discovered at an abandoned abbey, earlier that summer, in “The Mystery of St. Arondight’s”. Contains scenes of perilous adventure, violence, some sexual references, and strong language - everything a mature teenager (or immature adult) needs. |

Reviews for Echoes of the Eternal City
Historical and fantastical |
Having read the previous book 'The Mystery of St Arondight's' I really enjoyed the archaeological gang of teenagers and their adventures-historical and personal. The book mixed humour, thrills and fascinating historical references. I was left anticipating what they'd get up to next,as well as wondering how the relationships between the characters were going to play out.
Echoes of the Eternal City is the brilliant and mature, (sometimes immature -inneudo!) sequel which is full of humour, excitement and builds even more on historical context and facts. The action is fast paced and the author certainly knows her history and weaves this in to the fictional narrative. It asks the question - what if the Rome we know never existed? What if time could be changed thus disrupting history as we know it.
The teenagers' comradary and strong group relationship is apparent even through challenges and hardship. They are there for each other, and also enjoy a good deal of silliness and fun. These likeable characters make me empathise with them and I want to carry on reading their adventures and how they develop.
Historical and fantastical, S.M.Porter describes her scenes of Rome so vividly I could imagine myself there. She also explains at the end in the appendix what is fact and what is fiction which educates the reader even more.
All together, a very accomplished sequel and I eagerly await the next book and follow this group's adventures further!

The gang are back, a year on, new ground with a wild story to tell. S.M. Porter you’ve done it again, a book that once started you can’t put down. What a roller coaster, loved it.

Once I’d started reading, it was difficult to put down. The story, the interactions between the characters, and the insightful details about Rome and Roman history make this an interesting and very entertaining read.

Wow! S.M.Porter has done it again, showing that she really knows her stuff! Another exciting Roman adventure with the addition of a new character to spice things up. I especially love how she shows a balance of empathy, humour and loyalty within the friends, no matter what happens.......and to be sure - plenty happens!

Another page turner from S. M. Porter. This may be ancient Roman mythology but S. M. Porter brings it to life in a striking and imaginative way.
